New Scots: Integration strategy for Scotland

Community Sponsorship Groups in Scotland will benefit from understanding what is taking place nationally.

The Scottish Government have implemented a refugee integration strategy for 2018-2022, which Groups will find a useful guide for the support that they offer.

New Scots: refugee integration strategy 2018 to 2022

The New Scots strategy is the means through which integration is implemented at national and local levels in Scotland. It has been developed over a number of years through consultation with refugees and aims to ensure Scotland is a place of welcome.

Many of the areas covered in this information are areas of the New Scot: refugee integration strategy;

  • Needs of Asylum Seekers
  • Employability and Welfare Rights
  • Housing
  • Education
  • Language
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Communities, Culture and Social Connections

There are additional resources within the document, but also opportunities for refugees to feel engaged and part of the strategy for integration in Scotland.  There are summaries of the New Scots Strategy in a variety of languages, which you can find here.

Supporting Family Integration

More advice and support on how to support families and children in the integration process can be found in Scottish Refugee Councils, Family Integration Practice Guide. This guide combines perspectives from Scottish Refugee Council’s work with refugee families and children, and brings together views from their own practitioners, as well as a wide range of others involved in supporting families who are calling Scotland home.

Within the guide, it looks at good practice and approaches to integration, which may help you plan and deliver the support you offer to the family you support through Community Sponsorship, as well as extensive links to other resources on providing support across key areas of integration.
